years ago. Nothing to do with volume. It’s to do with signal distortion.

You’ll find it VERY hard to find a track made today at, or below, 0 dB.
Leave the gain at 12 o’clock and you’ll see the actuall dB level of the
track, or better yet, import a track into Audacity and see the VU meters go
into the red.
Besides, mixers today are digital and have very good headroom. So the risk
for audiable distortion is very low.
